Not the “Barn Dance” You Used to do in High School Gym Class

New to Square Dancing?

Need some proof of how fun square dancing is? Check out the faces of the folks in this video:

Great low-impact exercise

It’s not uncommon to walk the equivalent of 2 miles during an evening’s dance!  Put that unused treadmill in your basement!

You don’t need a partner

If you don’t have someone to dance with, don’t worry.  We have “angels” (experienced dancers) in all of our classes who’re going to be there to help you every step of the way!

Terrific mental workout

Square dancing is all about dancing the right moves as the “caller” sings them out, and there are a lot of moves.  You’ll be calling upon your mental and muscle memories constantly during a dance!

No better entertainment value anywhere

Most new dancer classes are free the first two weeks.  After that, it’s a very modest charge per person — way less than the cost of a movie!

Friendships for a lifetime

Square Dancing is “Friendship Set To Music.”  You’ll make friends that you’ll keep for a lifetime.  And no matter where on Earth you go, you’re going to find other dancers.  You’ll have instant new friends everywhere!

“But I hate country music!”

Today’s callers use rock, pop, jazz, blues, and more in addition to country.    The music is as varied as the callers and dancers!

Fun for the entire family

Square Dancing is fun for all ages.  Anyone from 8 to 80 can enjoy themselves during smoke / alcohol free dances!

Classes Calendar

Whether you’re just now getting into square dancing or you’ve got decades of experience, there’s always something new to learn.  Perhaps you’d like to learn how to dance at the Plus, Advanced, or Challenge Levels.  Or you’ve admired the Round Dancers and want to learn how to do that.  Perhaps DBD (“Dance By Definition”) will bring you the learning challenge you’re looking for.  Chances are, someone’s offering a class / workshop on those skills.  Our calendar below will help you find classes.

2018-2019 Beginner Class Information

Almost all of the clubs in central Ohio sponsor a beginners’ western square dance class each fall, usually in September or early October. The classes are fun, friendly, low-key, and yield a remarkable sense of accomplishment. But, don’t take our word for it – come see for yourself!

Classes run approximately 10 weeks for Basic. The next 10 weeks are for Mainstream. Then another 10 weeks for Mainstream Plus. Most classes will run through April / early May of the following year.

There is no need to register in advance. Please wear comfortable clothes and, if you have them, shoes with a smooth sole – makes dancing just a little easier!
